The US authorities, together with Bulgarian law enforcement officers, carried out an operation aimed at disrupting the operation of the ransomware NetWalker.

As the US Department of Justice pointed out, NetWalker operates on the Ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) model – developers provide access to malware to “affiliates” who attack victims.
During the investigation, law enforcement officers brought charges against a Canadian citizen. Thanks to attacks using NetWalker, he received at least $ 27.6 million.Since April 2020, the defendant has been involved in at least 91 attacks using NetWalker, law enforcement officials believe.
The authorities also seized $ 454,530 in cryptocurrency. This amount consists of the ransoms of three NetWalker victims.
In addition, Bulgarian law enforcement officers seized a “hidden resource on the darknet,” which the cybercriminals distributing NetWalker used to contact the victims.
According to the company Chainalysis, which helped the authorities in the investigation, the hackers received more than $ 46 million in ransom from their numerous victims.

At least 305 victims from 27 countries, including 203 US residents, suffered from NetWalker attacks. Among them are private companies, government agencies, hospitals and educational institutions.
